B-V colour

August 22, 2008 3:25 am

B-V colour is one of the two color indices in the UBV photometric system.

Astronomers measure the amount of light a star gives off in different colors. Hot stars give off more blue light than red; cool stars give off more red light than blue. Colored filters are used to measure different wavelengths of light from stars. The magnitude of the star is measured first through a standardized B-band (”blue”) filter. Then the star’s magnitude is measured through a V-band (”visible”, peaking in green) filter. The value of V is subtracted from B to get the B-V color index.

As a star gets cooler and therefore more red, the B-V color index increases, since smaller magnitudes correspond to brighter light. Hot stars have a small B-V and cool stars have a large B-V. Hotter stars therefore appear to the left on the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram and cooler stars appear on the right.

Volvic (mineral water)

March 31, 2008 7:35 am

Volvic is a brand of mineral water. Its source lies in the Parc Régional des Volcans d’Auvergne in the Massif Central, just to the north of the Puy de Dôme. The water’s distinctive mineral content is due to the nearby volcano which last erupted in 5760 BC: geologically speaking, very recently.

The first of the springs in the area was tapped in 1922, and the first bottles appeared on the market in 1938. Today, Volvic waters are internationally known. Over 50% of the production of Volvic water is exported to more than 60 countries throughout the world. Two bottling plants produce over 1 billion bottles of water annually and are the principal employers of the local commune. In 1993, the Volvic Company was bought by the Danone Group.

Volvic claims to be highly aware of the environment. Since 1997, Volvic has been using PETE, a recyclable material, to make their bottles.

Volvic also produces a range of fruit extract drinks in Europe named Volvic Touch of Fruit. In 2005 they were introduced in North America under the brand Volvic natural.

George the Volcano and Tyrannosaurus Alan

Recent television advertisements for Volvic feature two fictional characters that seem to have become mascots of sorts for Volvic: a tyrannosaurus rex named “Tyrannosaurus Alan” and a volcano named “George the Volcano”. George the Volcano’s voice is by Matt Berry and the voice of Tyrannosaurus Alan is by Rick Buckley.

The TV adverts starring these two mascots have become popular sources of ridicule and parody amongst the Youtube community — many videos featuring spliced and changed footage of the adverts amongst other things (CD-I games like Hotel Mario and Link: The Faces of Evil) have appeared on the website since the adverts’ inception (these videos are more commonly known as Youtube Poops).

Calcium carbamide

February 14, 2008 6:19 am

Calcium carbamide, sold under the trade name Temposil®, is an alcohol sensitizing agent. Its effects are similar to the drug Antabuse (disulfiram) in that it interferes with the normal metabolism of alcohol by preventing the breakdown of the metabolic byproduct acetaldehyde. The result is that when alcohol is consumed by users of calcium carbamide, they experience severe reactions which include symptoms such as sweating, difficulty breathing, rapid heartbeat, rash, nausea and vomiting, and headache.

While calcium carbamide is a good adjunct to other treatments for alcoholism, it has been found that, as with Antabuse, it is an ineffective therapy on its own, and many alcoholics will voluntarily discontinue the drug in order to continue drinking.
